The Irony called Nationalism

Our sense of patriotism is weird and some what unpleasant. It’s not about the love for your country, rather about how hard you hate Pakistan. I would say we shouldn’t be patriotic instead we must be matriarchal since we call India, Mother. Politics is muddled with religion, casteism and racism. They have no principle. Patriotism is measured in hatred and not in Love. Nationalists have no sense of nationalism. Here, nation is equated with religion and religion poison everything it touches. In this 21 st century where religion should be a personal thing rather than a collective representation, people still lingers on the values and morals elaborated by the religion for a group of people, when people used to live as a closed unit with minimum contact with other groups. Everything is global, we are living in the age of globalisation. independenceday2016speech.blogspot Recently some lawyer in Karnataka state, hit the court with a sedition case against a film actress, who jus...

THE EPIC - where to draw the line?

India is the land where history and myth get intertwined in such a way that you cannot say which is which. One of India's gift to the world of literature is her majestic epical wonder " Mahabharata ", attributed to some one(might be one person or many) called Vyasa or Vyas ( Ved Vyas ) which literally means one who dissected 'Veda' (religious and philosophical writings of Hindu religion). Research on this great epic revealed that many appendage had been done to the original text , before it became whole. Mahabharata's impact on Indian psyche is so profound that people consumed every word of it as such.  Characters were being worshipped as role models, like modern day Bollywood stars. As the generations passed by, line which divides the story and reality started blurring. Stories told and retold, appended stories that were not present at the beginning happened, kind of regional versions. Many dynasties and empires came and gone everyone tried to leave t...

Science and India

This topic had been in my mind for a pretty long time, how we treat science in  our country. Now  at this wonderful occasion of Merriam-Webster's naming of " Science " the word of the year, there will never be more precise timing than this to talk about this topic. Even in this twenty first century our scientific understanding is relatively poor. Most Indians never had a view of science further than academia. We equate science to academia, we never ever thought of science’s presence apart from that, in our daily life. Bharat Ratna (highest and prestigious honour conferred to an Indian citizen) awardee Prof. C.N.Rao  says we Indians lack scientific temper and former Chief Justice of India, Markandeya Katju not so long ago criticised we Indians are fools . You might wonder where is the relation between these two remarks?  When someone criticize, we never dare to do a self check before attacking the critique. And our way of counter argument will usually not dialectic...

India: A bleak future ahead ?

For the last few months anarchy and confusion is ruling our country, sectarian fights, communal riots, honour(pseudo-honour) killing, you name it and we have it over here in India. CAG, the whistleblower, tabled a storming report in rajyasabha about discrepencies in coal allocation, which was directly under Mr. Manmohan Singh, so much for his well-knit image. Assam and Allahabad is burning. Exodus, bigger than at the time of 'Moses' is happening. Government is failing, People of this democracy is failing. India's persona of 'unity in diversity' is falling off. We have become a bunch of intolerant, abusive barbarians. For eg. if we take Assamese, their exodus is a big concern, eventhough Govt says all these were rumours, which have been uploaded online from Pakistan, these people have good reason to be feared. There is a feeling of alienation in the air for quite long time. If this condition prevails India will be no better than poorer African and other east ...

Are we Indians?

We are degraded into a bunch of bigots. All the events that happened recently, point to our intolerance. Let us consider India as a big family, then how long do you think  a family can persist with intolerant family members fighting each other. Why do you think India has this unique “Unity in Diversity”? . B’coz we, Indians used to respect others and their differences in views and perspectives, that is the reason why our history shows the adoption of outsiders as one of our own, who came here to conquer and get conquered by this country’s culture & people, thus becoming a part of India.   A little bit History It begins with Indus valley civilisation, then came Aryan influence thus starting Vedic era. Many famed written manuscripts belong to this era, then came the era of social change in the form of Budha and Mahavira. This duo influenced Indian and even Asian conscience. India’s famous empires,  Maurya empire, Rashtrkutas, Silahar etc are highly influenced b...

Government vs People

I think our government has a different idea of democracy, in simple sense it is "majority rule" but in India, it is the other way around, the majority is being manipulated by a few political and business barons. Even common people are showing the tinge of this greediness for power and money. In our economy 50% (majority) of people are below poverty line and other 25-35% are middle class (upper and lower) and the rest includes this  millionaires, billionaires and political barons. And this les than 25% has a significant influence in almost everything that's going on in our country, they control "News", "Media" and even influence "bills" presented before Parliament. Government and it's sermonizers till day were successful in making people believe Business and Industries are the only hope left,  anything that will animate business would be a boost to our country economically for that they start to present people with statistics,” game of num...

A Dam and Two States

History "Mulla-periyar" is the current buzzword in India. There is film based on this issue, " Dam 999 ", which got its entry to Oscar library. Don't think that it is the name of some celebrity infact it is bigger and larger than that, it is a dam, which is almost 110 years old, across the river Periyar ( Kerala state ). The dam got its name from confluence of "Mullaiyar" and "Periyar" rivers. It is built by British Corps Royal Engineers, at those time when India was a colony of Britian. When the dam was built it was under the jurisdiction of "Maharaja of Travancore" (Travancore presently a part of Kerala state) and the Madras Presidency (British) kind of forced (as every one knows, there is no other option) Travancore to get in a deal with them of leasing water supply for 999 years. After the British rule were over both the Kerala and Tamilnadu (Madras presidency) states renewed lease agreement. Problems Since it i...

Children of India

Child labour is very much a serious crisis that India needs to confront. Our hon. Commerce Minister Anand Sharma was interviewed by a reporter during his visit to New Zealand, for FTA(free trade agreement)agreement between India & New Zealand, about child labour and how FTA will affect this. He asked this relevant question in the context, India having 12 million children working at the age of having education. Instead of understanding the seriousness of matter our hon. minister replied, "it is insulting to India and India does not allow any extraneous matters, there are other platforms to discuss this, not in trade negotiations". He, not in any way try to face the question boldly instead he always tried to slip by saying things like, "India does not encourage (it), India has forbidden child labour. We are a rule-based and rule-governed country. People should understand the complexities of India's situation and not try to mock us" . If this the attitude of...

Redrawing The Poverty Line

And this century's funniest joke is made by, any guesses, Planning Commission, India. As you know even if we are a fast developing economy, more than half population is below poverty line (BPL). And guess what, Planning Commission had come up with a fantastic way to get around poverty problem, they lowered this line as low making sure that no one would be behind this line.             Recently, prices of everything from vegetables to food grains to fuel has shot up like a rocket. If you are an Indian you would definitely share my feeling. Fuel is an exception, whose price rise every 4 month  has become a ritual in India.              Neglecting all these facts, Planning Commission in its affidavit to Supreme Court has claimed that those spending more than Rs 965 per month in urban India and Rs 781 in rural India will not be considered poor. In their claim Rs.32/da...

Elective Dictatorship in India ?

Well done Congress, very well done, you thugs have proved to be the worst government ever. The fact that this guys are Indians (even though its a shame) make their demeanour much more wretched and pathetic than British empire. They say, there is a constitution and Parliament to deal with this issue, but one thing they forgot or they like to forget is that, the constitution and the government is for the welfare of the country. And by saying country we don't mean the buildings and the land, we the living, breathing Indians are its soul and we are the country.  They are there to serve the country, they only represent us, that doesn't give them the freedom to do anything they want with that power (actually its is not power its supposed to be responsibility) or use that power to serve their personal needs.                   It is crystal clear from the reaction of the people that ...

Education: A Deciding Factor

Education has become more of a society status symbol rather than a necessity or essentiality. Now a days, people think getting a degree or a Ph.D or a 6 digit salary is what education means.  Education has become an instrument for most of us to get a good job, to build up a shining career. The original purpose of education has been long forgotten. Because, academics are now career oriented, we are not seeing any brilliant scientist or a visionary leader or an engineering genius emerge. Most of the teachers are in the profession only because they don't get any other. This will ruin the future of our country and the future generation.  The main problem is that our education system is not good enough to find the right fits for the right profession. Children  should be given chance to show their talents and skills from the primary schools itself. Their interests should be understood by the teachers. Different beings have different skills and different interests. Our educati...

Long live humans

I always wondered by the fact that on what basis did they give Mr. Obama a Nobel peace prize. All that i can remember what he did is talking. Or is it because he wrote a book, then its definitely not a big deal at all. Even Paris Hilton did publish books. Any one can write a book now a days, if it is by a celebrity then its going to be a best seller even if it has blank pages. As far as i know you don't expect to acquire peace by talking, you need to do something for that. Even so i think he is much much better than Mr.Bush. In India we have a decent and respectable man as a PM but as we all know he doesn't have a say in any matter. He must stand up to his reputation. People think he is just a puppet in the hands of Congress. If we go to Italy it is worse in there. PM is a morally  deteriorated person. The man slept with almost every women he came across and is accused with paying money for underage sex. Still the guy is shameless. Another one is Mr.Gaddhafi who is not r...

Multiculturalism or Diversity

Multiculturalism has once again become the hot topic for debate. Few months before British PM commented that, multiculturalism policy is not going well in UK. Some members of Mr.Cameron's centre-right Conservative party, activists in right-wing movements and some voters believe that Britain has become a safe haven for people with anti-Western political views. He joined hands with Angela  Merkel  (German Chancellor) in this matter. He commented that there has always been a clash between Muslim community in Briton and European values. Mr. Cameron said it was time to replace Britain's "passive tolerance" with an "active, muscular liberalism".  Europeans  greatest fear is that it is a threat to national security. They are trying to create an atmosphere of post  26/11 again. In the case of India, it is different. In our country we don't use the term "multiculturalism", instead we use "diversity". Here most of our states are formed on ...
