A Dam and Two States

History "Mulla-periyar" is the current buzzword in India. There is film based on this issue, " Dam 999 ", which got its entry to Oscar library. Don't think that it is the name of some celebrity infact it is bigger and larger than that, it is a dam, which is almost 110 years old, across the river Periyar ( Kerala state ). The dam got its name from confluence of "Mullaiyar" and "Periyar" rivers. It is built by British Corps Royal Engineers, at those time when India was a colony of Britian. When the dam was built it was under the jurisdiction of "Maharaja of Travancore" (Travancore presently a part of Kerala state) and the Madras Presidency (British) kind of forced (as every one knows, there is no other option) Travancore to get in a deal with them of leasing water supply for 999 years. After the British rule were over both the Kerala and Tamilnadu (Madras presidency) states renewed lease agreement. Problems Since it i

Agrarian culture is dying in India

History India had always been an agrarian land. We were so much dependent on agriculture and nature that we gave the animals a very reverent position in our day to day life. We respected them and honoured them. We even related them with the gods, as they helped us in garnering our livelihood. We have a relationship that dates back almost 8000-9000 B.C with agriculture.  Dangers Contribution of agriculture in GDP is declining in an alarming pace. It was 30% in 1990-91 which reduced to almost half, 15.7% in 2008-09 (according to Indian Council for Agriculture Research). Since the agriculture sector is not so promising these days, people are migrating to other sectors for livelihood. We can't blame them, for they can't sustain their day to day needs of life with profits from agriculture.  Moreover the fast growing industries (Industrialisation) are acting as magnets for those who want to earn decent livelihoods. Agriculture sector can't compete with them, at least p

Children of India

Child labour is very much a serious crisis that India needs to confront. Our hon. Commerce Minister Anand Sharma was interviewed by a reporter during his visit to New Zealand, for FTA(free trade agreement)agreement between India & New Zealand, about child labour and how FTA will affect this. He asked this relevant question in the context, India having 12 million children working at the age of having education. Instead of understanding the seriousness of matter our hon. minister replied, "it is insulting to India and India does not allow any extraneous matters, there are other platforms to discuss this, not in trade negotiations". He, not in any way try to face the question boldly instead he always tried to slip by saying things like, "India does not encourage (it), India has forbidden child labour. We are a rule-based and rule-governed country. People should understand the complexities of India's situation and not try to mock us" . If this the attitude of

Suffocating Julian Assange.....

In the walks of life you will always happen to see extraordinary people, doing extraordinary things. Why is it extraordinary, can't everyone do it? of course everyone can, but nobody would dare to, that's what makes it extraordinary. i think Julian Assange is one such man who deserve the title "extraordinary". He represents the "free world" where there are no classified files, no top secrets, where everyone has the right for information. Yes, there are many pros and cons for this, but still we can check overspending in the name of national security and violation of human rights. Mr. Assange has now reached a blind alley, no the right words would be the big power players drew him to a blind alley. Legal actions against him are violations of human rights, i.e they are denying him freedom of expression. Now Wikileaks are forced to withheld its operation due to the financial blockade by Bank of America, VISA, Master Card, Paypal and Western Union. Ameri
