A constellation of lights

9th October. I sensed there is something wrong with my alarm, the music it’s playing is different. I cursed myself for changing the alarm music. I hit on the snooze button hardly, nothing happened. Music is still playing. What the hell, I thought. Then it came to me, it is not my alarm, it’s the phone which cut short my sleep. It was early morning and I was still in half sleep and was angry. I answered the call with obvious frustration in my speech. "Hello?" "We're planning a trip. You coming?" "Okay..." I took some time to let it sink in. I am going next week. it was my elder cousin sister.she always keeps this air of urgency in everything she proposes. She told me, her family,my other cousin sister and their kids are also coming, along with my Valyachan (elder brother of my father) and valyamma(his wife) I was searching for right words. What to say ? at last I managed to say, “okay”. I still have no idea why we are going to Kolkata , all ...

Realisation

An old monk is sitting on top of a rocky platform. Rock is placed vertically from the ground, at a height reachable to him, so that he can get comfy sitting in Lotus position. He looks like a statue, in his traditional robe. People started coming in. Within days his place has changed into a makeshift shrine. But all this time he was unaware of things around him. Next day he opened his eyes. He was surprised to see such crowd infront. He stood up and said, "sorry for troubling your daily life, I ll shift from here. Please go on with your daily activities". People surprised, "oh Monk we are here only for you. Please help us in making our life a  better one. You are the representation of God itself". He said, "Don't rely on anyone else for your betterment of life. Only you can save yourself". People asked, "oh monk do you not believe in God? Can't God help us all?" He said, "I believe in myself, you should too. As for the matter of your...

A cruel destiny

It is raining heavily followed by strong wind. Rivers are overflowing, water is flowing over the bridges making it impossible to distinguish where the bridge ends and water begins. He heard that some houses were taken away by the flood along with people in it. He can see the sea level is dangerously up, almost close to his home. Water is dripping from the thatched roof, floor is all wet. It is dangerous to stay inside, he thought. He went inside his home and wake up his mother. She is all he has. Mahesh and his mother are fisherman folks. Now, the weather being stubborn like this he can't go out in the sea. No one dares to challenge the nature. This much he and his folks know. Because they know, as much caring and giving the nature can be, she could be awfully cruel and unforgiving. So they decided to leave the place along with others. The roads are all submerged, flooding rivers and canals carried back all sorts of wastes that we threw out earlier and dumped it back in to our ...

Ants, Me and MY Niece

They get into the taxi along with their wheel bags and suitcases. Taxi started to fade away as I looked by. It resembled a mini-truck stuffed with loads of sand bags. Hands came out of the speeding car waving goodbyes. I waved back at them. The summer heat produced a mirage effect, as the image of speeding car rippled. Now, I am alone in the big apartment. My family, they are off to visit the home town. There is nobody to control me. I am free. It felt like you have got the password for someone else’s admin account. That day, I left the office a little early. The work was as usual hectic and stressful. Metro transit is where I like to spend time. I read most of my favourite books on my transit. I have to walk for 5 minutes from metro station to reach home. On my way back home there is a small store running by an old man who has the most beautiful white beard I have seen, just like Christmas Papa, Daily, I wish to buy muffin cakes stacked in a beautiful glass cabinet in front...

A trip to remember

Everyone likes to travel. Some travel alone, some with friends and families. It is engraved in our soul. Even the laziest of mankind needs to travel. The latter was a reference to me, of course. Traveling with friends are always fun. So me and my friend Vipin, decided to escape from the boring reality of daily office life. The main problem we faced was that he resides at Kerala and I am here in Delhi. After a long lethargic session, we decided to go to Sikkim, the land of serene beauty. We wanted it be a memorable one. we were like two kids who have got their hands on a new set of Playstation, we were at cloud nine. At last....... we are going to be alone, without any worries & responsibilities of the life.  5 th November 2016 It was a fine morning I was having a tea, reading the newspaper waiting for my turn at the bathroom.  My phone rang, it was him, Vipin. I picked up, Me: Hi Vipin: Hi, Where are you? Me: At home, why? V : We are going, right? I...

The bloodsucking Yakshi

When I was a kid, April and May fell in the list of my favourite months. Not because it's going to rain and there would be mud all around, but those are the months my cousins would be here at our family house, in our hometown in Kerala. Those are the memories I would cherish forever. My grand-mother has 5 offsprings, 4 boys and a girl. My father is the second eldest of five. Then, he was the only one staying in Kerala and everyone else was in different parts of India, a Pan-India Family one could say. We were all present, it's like Parliament, shouting, laughing, scolding children, people everywhere, busy doing their chores. An outsider entering the home can still go unnoticed. Life was less complicated then. We were just ........just ourselves. Everyone you valued dearly is with you. It's like, the world has shrunken to a square block of bricks and mortar. Now it's all feel like a fairy-tale, one of the best things about joint-family. We are all tired of day's...

The Good Vibration

He was a good man. He did a lot of good deeds during his short life span. He was always happy even though he was financially a big zero. He had the gift of spreading happiness all around. He radiates positivity and happiness. He was kind to humans and animals alike. “His death was a blow to humanity” people said. “God always call back those who are close to his heart”, they say. He donated his organs, for the good of humanity and science. Today, that man is going up in flames in front of those, whom he shared the lion share of his life. He gained his consciousness. Its pure white everywhere, he was stunned, where is this place? “You are with me”, a voice whispered in his ears. He looked around, no one was there. "From I the entire universe has been born", it said. GOD?  why can’t I see you? B'coz I am just a vibration or oscillation or you can call me consciousness. You can only feel me. Life of a KID

Lives of kids are simple. They are like butterflies, colourful and beautiful. Being a child is the closest you can get in your entire life to total Freedom. But sometimes their emotions too can take complex form. But when they do, then adults will be helpless as their emotions outstrip all logic and sense in this world. Its such a story. There were two kids, a little girl named Chandra and a boy named Adi. Both are of same age and in the same school. They were friends. Their love for each other is cute and fresh, like morning dew, unlike the elder people with prejudices and conditions. That day was Chandra's birthday, she dressed like an angel. Everybody loved her. Her smile lightens the night, just like the moon. Watching her smile is a divine experience. He too was there, to wish her a “haaapy bithday” . Adi give her a wide smile. Then they both ran to the gift table to open the packs she was getting. She got lots of gifts. One by one they started to open the gifts. B...

A Beautiful Day

It was just like any other day. Life was withering out shuttling between office and home. Every day I start with thinking to do something diferent, crazy, but status quo prevails.I can feel the emptiness of the routine chores. Life has become so mechanised that I couldn't even enjoy the simple delights, life can offer. Tension & stress has become natural state of mind, calmness and peace have become visitors. It was a fine morning, I was off to office just like any other day. I took a good look around. People were still jogging inside the park. Trees and shrubs were fresh as dew. Squirells running around the footpath. Birds were making loud noises, as if we humans were not the only one, they too were busy on a morning. Nature was beautiful and fantastic as ever. No one could match her beauty. I have to walk to reach metro station. Somebody called my name fom across the road, It was Dev. I waved at him and signalled at my watch that I m already late for ...

Micro Story - Freedom

What is freedom? She asked me. Her little shiny eyes were filled with curiosity. She is just 8 yrs old. I was searching for exact words to explain. What is freedom? Is it the rights we gain? Does that mean we have right to say whatever we want? Live, however way we prefer and could take our own decisions. OR Is it our duty to do things wisely? Live, a good life, helpful to others &ourselves and choose wisely between good & bad. What is it exactly? Does freedom means different for different people, I was lost in thought. I asked her, what you would like to do right now. She made up a thoughtful face then answered, i m going to play now, she gleamed. I let her go.

The Sacred Cow

Scene-1 A middle class family of Father, Mother and a son, at the comfort of their home. F(father) - ( while   reading newspaper ) That's   definitely a right move. We should return to our culture. We must revive our original culture. M(mother) - What is it? ( Voicing from kitchen ) F - Govt is trying to launch a ban on beef. M - Why, all of a sudden? F - You don't understand the real implications of this move. Cow is a venerable creature in Hindu culture. It is our "gow matha". How could we allow maltreatment towards such an animal? She is life giving & sustaining force. Some people show no respect and feel no remorse in making it their menu. It’s a disgrace. We should react. M - Yes, you are right. S(son) - You know dad, there are some kids in our school who bring beef. But they don't reveal it. They used to lie, as chicken or mutton. M - Oh my god, that's disgusting. F - Such people should be thrown out of our coun...
